Bournemouth Tandoori

Wed. 4th April 2001

Our team conference was due to start start the next day. We had travelled down a day early because even though we were due to start at 12:00, the state of transport in the country these days made travelling on the day an unlikely prospect.

We declined the kind offer of our employer to have dinner at the hotel and headed for this Indian Restaurant, mainly because Phil Higgins, one of our regular contributors, had researched the area. Phil is usually lucky in selecting eating venues, so, after a couple of drinks, we trooped in.

Although the place was empty, we didn't really expect otherwise at this early hour. Seven of us sat down (another joined us later). Rather than spend an age trying to order individually, we decided to give the chef a chance to offer us his best shot and asked for a selection of dishes - none too hot - rice and naans.

We were all very much in a sociable mood, so concentrating on the dishes was not a top priority. The manager, who told us he also took his turn in the kitchen, gave us a little spiel on the dishes, and recounted a tale of a diner who asked for a dish with "black chilli" - apparently extremely hot. This prompted recollections of similar escapades from the throng!

When the dishes arrived, only the briefest descriptions were given. However, I did notice that there was a distinct absence of floods of oil - the dishes were all very well presented, and the aromas were enticing. I managed to try most of the dishes, ranging from chicken, through spinach and potato, to lamb. All were very appetising, and, as usual, I was the last to finish.

The restaurant is not very large, but the facilities are presentable, and we felt quite comfortable. The bill was picked up by another team member, and was reasonable for the type and location. All in all, we enjoyed the meal: good food, a pleasant host and venue, and good value.
