Wagamama - The Way of The Noodle
Wagamama: the Way of the Noodle

A Japanese noodle book containing 50 recipes for ramen, soba and udon noodles and their soup stocks and toppings. It also includes a chapter on health, and topics such as the history of the noodle, Zen, Bruce Lee, and a day in the life of the successful fast-food noodle restaurant, Wagamama.

I've been there a few times - works canteen type of layout - bench seats, waiters with headsets and instructions to fit you in wherever there's a space.

I don't know much about Japanese cuisine, but what we had was good (except for the last time we went, when the dishes were not as hot as they should have been, and were returned for, presumably, reheating).

The vegetable and fruit juices are delicious, and the atmosphere is generally very young and "cosmopolitan". For us hicks, it's meant to mean a lot that an ethnic restaurant is actually frequented by the same ethnic group - and it is. It is also frequented by practically every other ethnic group I could identify - and then some!

I understand that there are other branches around London, but I've not looked for them. Wagamamas is well worth one or two visits - it's not expensive, but you must be prepared to wait in line for up to 40 minutes if you hit it at the wrong (right?) time. The wait is relieved to a certain extent by the waiters taking orders for drinks, to be consumed in the queue.

The queue itself snakes up the stairs, and past the kitchen, where you can see all the meals and drinks being prepared - a good ploy to get your juices flowing.

Verdict: Interesting, inexpensive. I will go again.
