Casa Pilinca Spanish Restaurant

Casa Pilinca Spanish Restaurant

Casa Pilinca is a Spanish restaurant with a Chilean owner. However, the menu is typically Spanish as we would understand it. It is located on King Street, which if you don’t know Knutsford is the lower of the two main one way streets that run through the town. It competes with some pretty impressive competition, with restaurants and bistros of all descriptions abounding, including the renowned Belle Epoque Brasserie, to up-market Italian chains such as Est Est Est and Portofino and a good array of individual bistros, bars and restaurants. Knutsford is definitely somewhere to go to satisfy virtually any taste and especially on Friday and Saturday virtually every establ;ishment appears to be busy.

Casa Pilinca is located about halfway along King Street on the lefthand side. It has only street or nearby public car parking, but this is not a huge problem. However anybody with any handicap might have difficulty negotiating some of the inclines, cobbles and narrow pavements in the town.

My wife and I chose to eat off the Tapas selection on the menu rather than to choose off the separate starter and main courses on the menu. These looked appetising enough, but we thought the variety of dishes on the Tapas menu would be more interesting on a first visit.

Because of the structure of the building, which is very old and full of beams and steps, then the table seating can be a bit limiting. We were originally seated at the top end of the restaurant a couple of step levels above the front, but were hemmed in by a party of about eight. We asked to be moved and were seated in the middle of the restaurant where it narrows into almost a corridor. At least we weren’t hemmed in although it was a slightly odd experience.

Service was friendly and helpful and some cold beer while we chose from the menu went down well, as did the beautiful olives placed on the table.

Between us we ordered about seven different Tapas dishes. My wife ordered the vegetarian ones and I ordered the meat ones. In particular we had bread topped with garlic and chopped tomatoes (Pan Tumaca), aubergines (Berenjenas) , garlic mushrooms (Setas Ajillo), Canarian potatoes with a Mojo sauce (Papas Arrugadas), lamb stew (Cordero Salsa), chicken stew (Pollo Ajillo) and pan fried kidneys (Rinones Extremenos). We found the portions ample and our regret was not being a party of four rather than two as we would have done more justice to each portion by ordering for four and sharing around. As it was the two of us finished the dishes we had ordered. In particular, the kidneys were very nice but eating such a large portion between two meant that it was a bit of a ‘samey’ experience.

Overall, the food was very nice, the service was good and the surroundings were individual. The bill came to a most acceptable £30.55 for the two of us including drinks. We had a thoroughly pleasant evening and would recommend Casa Pilinca to others.
